Are these Compound Sentences?

Hi, I just came across a website which said that the following sentences are examples of compound sentences. I believe this information to be incorrect so I wanted to check it here with you all:

  1. Mary went to movie while John bought food.
  2. Stan perfected the exam because he studied all night.

I believe that both of the above are examples of complex sentences. They can't be compound sentences since there are no coordinating conjunctions being used, but rather subordinating conjunctions ('while,' and 'because').

Can you please let me know? Thank you.
