Are there difference in these two sentences?

I held the thief by hand.

or

I held the thief by THE hand.

I personally think that the above two sentences have no difference.

However, someone said that the first sentence means I catch the thief by bare hands without using any weapons. The second sentence means I catch the thief's hand.

Is it correct?

Wrong. The first one is wrong. You need "I held the thief by the hand".
