Are there any instance where I should use the word history with a definite article?

I"m just wondering this since I have seen both uses but it somewhat confused me.

I mean what would be the difference? For example:

He will go down in the history as a hero.

"go down in history" is the correct form.

Use 'the' when there's an of-phrase like these: the history of China; the history of science; the history of religion
