Are the two given sentences using 'total' acceptable and correct?

1. Many individual schoolchildren have inadequate total food intake, which eventually makes them undernourished.
2. Many individual schoolchildren suffer inadequacy in their total food intake, which eventually makes them undernourished.

Both sentences are correct but awkward. I prefer #1 to #2. Have you considered expressing your meaning more simply?

Both sentences are correct but awkward. I prefer #1 to #2.

Have you considered expressing your meaning more simply?

eg Many schoolchildren do not have enough to eat, which eventually makes them undernourished.
