Those are a bit awkward. Try instead:

I converted to Buddhism about a year ago.

I've been a practising Buddhist for about a year.

I recommend that you avoid this awkward construction with both 'since' and 'ago'. Native speakers say 'for'. It means the same thing, but it's shorter and more idiomatic.
