Are 'the latter' and 'the same' correctly used in the sentence?

Are 'the latter' and 'the same' correctly used in the sentence?

Helen may not be as lovable or as good as her mother, but the latter will always be the woman she looks up to, as the same is also the one who has brought her up to the person she is today.
