Are the brackets necessary in sentences?

Could someone please tell me how to phrase these and whether the brackets are necessary?

1 My employer will find something to fire me (for) eventually.

2He's not as good (a) player as before.

3 Just (by) looking at her you'd think she was French.

4 How can one shop in a store this ugly/in this ugly a store? (Are both correct?)

Thank you

1) I would change the something to a reason and for isn't needed in this sentence (sounds better to me if you don't have the for) 2) you need the "a", player is countable. 3) by is needed in this sentence. "Just looking at her" is followed by other usages (don't know why, I will just give you an example and let someone else who knows why explain it to you) Just looking at him gives me the creeps.

  • 4) Do you mean the store's decorations are ugly, or the things they sell are ugly?
  • Your sentence means the decorations of the store are ugly.
