are running VS will be running

Dear helpers.

I learned that I can use the present progressive for the near future

e.g.) The shuttles are running tomorrow.

A couple of days ago, I studied about the future progressive, the usage of which has one for arranged activities.

e.g.) The shuttles will be running tomorrow.

Not that I come to think of it, the two above are exactly the same.

Q) If there is any difference between them in meaning or nuance, could you let me know?

Not much practical difference, M&M. The shuttles are running tomorrow suggests that the speaker has seen a schedule or other evidence of the future event-- it has nothing to do with the speaker; it is an observation. The shuttles will be running tomorrow suggests that the speaker is including his opinion in the equation.

  • He has checked the schedule or his memory and in his opinion the shuttles will be in operation.
  • Nuances, certainly, and unconscious ones at that-- I wouldn't hold a speaker to his future verb form, if I were you.
