Are or Is?

My daughter's school came up with the question where she had to select 'Is' or 'Are'.
The question was:

...then 3 table spoons of sugar ___ added.

I say its 'is' added and not 'are'.
Teacher says wrong.

What do you say?
Thanks.

Then 3 tablespoons of sugar ___ added. There is good argument for both. One amount (3 tablespoons) per the recipe.

  • Then 3 tablespoons of sugar ___ added.
  • There is good argument for both.
  • One amount (3 tablespoons) per the recipe.
  • Three individual spoonfuls.
  • I would use the singular, but with the definite article, since the 3 tablespoons was mentioned earlier in the list of ingredients.

Both are correct. It's an odd question for that very reason.
