Are or Is?

hi

please tell me which one of the verb is appropriate:

"The area of this field is 200 square yards, if your mathematics ARE or IS correct."

I think I would say if the calculations are correct, not the mathematics. Calculations is definitely plural.

Nona the Guru, would you say calcuations or mathematics in Jolly Olde England?

Yes, GG, calculations/computations. Maths would be loose-termed, IMO.

According to the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary (7th edition), 'mathematics' (the process of calculating using numbers) can be used with either 'is' or 'are'. The example sentence is "If my mathematics is/are right, the answer is 142."
