Are only medical doctorates are recognized by title?

In newspaper writing is it true that only medical doctorates are recognized by title?
I have noticed that I don't seem to see those with doctorates in non-medical fields with "Dr." before their names or with PhD or ThD following their names. Have I observed correctly? And do you have any thoughts on why this might be?

Thanks so much.

If you're talking about newspapers in general circulation, you're probably right, although I can't speak with authority on the subject. I know that degreed members of a community are often shown respect by refering to them as "Doctor Jones," both in person and in written material, including trade journals and periodicals. This includes doctors of music and doctors of divinity.

  • As far as the doctorate being appended to the name (Brad Jones, LLD), you often find this in letters to the editor in any newspaper, but I suspect it's just the way the person has signed, and doesn't reflect any editorial decision.
