Are 'main topic,' 'a broad one,' and 'divide / break' correctly used in the sentences (which have to with making an outline for a classroom science report)?

The main topic "microorganisms" is a broad one. You must divide / break it into subtopics.

Hi Yes, all of that is good - Micro-organisms are the main thing that the speaker is going to talk about - It's a very general area of study - quite a broad one - I slightly prefer 'break', but either word is OK. It's a broad area of study, so we need to break it down into smaller subtopics I would definitely use a hyphen with micro-organisms Dave

The main topic, "micro-organisms", is a broad one.

Should there be a comma before and after "micro-organisms"? Thanks.

Hi

Yes, I think the commas work well there, to set off the main subject of discussion. If it is the title of the talk, you could use quotes or italics:

- The speaker's main topic, micro-organisms, is a broad one.

- His talk, Micro-Organisms, was fascinating
