Are/ Is

Hello friends,

I have an argument/discussion that needs settled. Although I already know the answer, I need outside confirmation, an independent adjudicator if you like. Emotion: smile

Which of the following statements would be correct?

1) How's the football going? Is Barcelona winning?

or

2) How's the football going? Are Barcelona winning?

Thanks for your help

As Barcelona is a football club so that I suppose it is correct to write "Is Barcelona winning?"

LOL - I have to guess that the answer you received so far is not the one you "know" to be correct. Or maybe you just want a weightier book of evidence.

You may find that both are correct. In the US, we tend to use the singular verb for organizations. I would say "is" 100% of the time in that sentence. I, too, consider it a subsituation for "the entire club" and not "the players that form

You are right on both counts GG!! It's not the answer I was looking for and I would also like a weightier book of evidence. As a native English speaker, I would have always used 'Are' for that question. Just as a follow-up, we're not consistent with is/are for teams. If the team name is plural, you'll hear the plural. If the team name is singular, you'll hear the singular.

The Bulls are having a good year. The Pistons are having a bad year.

The Heat is a good team.

Are the Bears winning? Are the Lions winning? Is the Heat winning?
