Are Donor and Donator interchangeable words?

We have a special parking spot here at work for the "Heart Walk Donator of the Month". I didn't think it was a word at first. It reminded me of when people would say orientate instead of orient when referring to orientation. However, there are several online dictionaries that list it as a word and a synonym for Donor.

I also saw someone refer to it as a back-formation.

Any insight would be great!

I would say that it is little used (one dictionary lists it as an Americanism) and should be replaced by the better-known and more standard 'Donor'.
