Are detailed (adjective) and brief (adjective) antonymous?

My friend told me that they were however I don't think so. There's a subtle but important difference.
A brief answer is short and to the point.
A detailed answer has many details.
However I do agree that we tend to omit some details in order to make an answer brief. But that's about it.
The correct antonym for brief is lengthy but a lengthy answer doesn't necessarily have to be detailed. Because most of it may contain hot air. Which is why in exams teachers ask for a detailed (not lengthy) answer for questions carrying 10 marks.

This has been asked before. To say that one word is a synonym or antonym of another is always debatable, and the terms are loose ones. I would not call "brief" and antonym of "deatiled' because "brief" speaks to duration more than to content to my mind, but I would not argue with your friend.
