Are created vs were created

Laptops, smart phones, and tablets were made by lots of work. But not all products are developed by hard work. Some inventions (were created/ are created) by accident or scientists’ mistakes. Penicillin, for instance, was discovered quite accidentally when Alexander Fleming was working on bacteria.

Which one do you prefer? Why?

I think "are" follows most naturally from the previous sentence.
