Are conjunctions more versatile than I thought?

Fred asks questions he already knows the answers to, so that he can sound intelligent when proving the given answers wrong.

1) Can subordinating conjunctions (like so that) join a subordinate clause (so that he can sound...) to a complex sentence (Fred asks questions he already knows the answers to)?

I only ask because definitions I've read of subordinating conjunctions say that they join a main clause to a subordinate clause and mention nothing about their ability to join a complex sentence to a subordinate clause.

----------------------

Same goes with coordinating conjunctions: 'so' joins a complex sentence to a main clause here:

I used to walk to school because I didn't have a car, so I am now very fit.

2) Why don't sites that explain the uses of conjunctions show such examples, as all these sites are doing is making their uses appear very restricted? (I understand that not every use can be exemplified, but surely just one like above could be)...

Thanks a lot for your insights.

Both your sentences look OK to me. I can't really answer your second question, except to say that your questions usually seem to be at quite a detailed and advanced level, so they might sometimes be beyond the scope of general-purpose learners' websites.

I understand some of my questions are a bit ridiculous, but an opinion can be just as valuable when dealing with a subject as subjective as sentence analysis.

Thanks.
