Are both sentences using 'make a difference' acceptable? If not, how can I make them correct? Thank you.

1. The guidance counselor told the teacher: "Constant communication between you and the parents could make a difference in helping the erring children mend their ways."
2. The guidance counselor told the teacher: "Constant communication between you and the parents could make a difference and help their erring children mend their ways."
