Are both of the sentences in bold correct? And are they basically interchangeable in the context?

1 I'm sorry he cheated you for money. I guess once a fraud, always a fraud.

2 Yes, but maybe that's why I didn't really give him any money.

2 Yes, but maybe that's why I never really gave him any money.
