Are both correct?

I said to him,"Will you not sit down?"

When the sentence is changed into indirect speech,

1. I told him if he would not sit down.

2. I told him to sit down.

Which is correct or are both correct?

I suggest "I asked him if he would sit down."

Neither one is correct. #1 is not grammatical.


I asked him to please sit down.

I asked him politely to sit down.

I asked him politely if he would like to sit down.
