Are "around" needed after "turned/spun/whirled"?

Jeff turned/spun/whirled (around) to see a man entering.

If we're talking 180 degrees, do I need "around" after any of "turned", "spun" or "whirled"?

It's optional. I think in many contexts, the context will make clear hat Jeff does. You could also say it in other ways, eg He looked back , , , .
