Are appositives redundant?

In sentences like;

We both wondered what would happen next.

some people argue that "both" is redundant since the personal pronoun "we" explains the plural nature of the subject. Other argue that "both" clerly idntifies that "we" refers to only two people. So is "both" in the above sentence redundant or not?

And "both" stresses the accordance of the states of their minds in this sentence, so not redundant anyway.
