Approximate

The teahouse was always set in a specailly designed garden that allowed tea drinkers,

as they progressed slowly toward the house, to stop at designated places along the pathway,

thereby approximating the experience of shedding their worldy cares.

I'm not sure about this phrase 'approximate the experience.'

What does this mean?

Thanks in advance.

To approximate an action is to do something very similar to it. It's not exactly the same thing, but it comes very near to being the same thing. So by stopping at certain places along the path, the tea drinkers did something that was very like getting rid of their everyday worries, or at least it was something that was a symbol of this.

A bit more, just for fun:

When the guests arrive, they are not greeted at the door by their host or hostess, but are guided through a series of open doors to a waiting room. Here they are served a small porcelain cup of hot water taken from a kettle in the tearoom as a foretaste of the water to be used in the tea making. They then make their way quietly and calmly into the garden and a

Dear Mariott

It sounds very beautiful

I'm not quite happy with the word approximate. This is to do with arithmetic - for example - if I am asked to divide 107.95 by 17. 6 then I can work out, approximately, that the answer is six

This seems quite far from what the creators and keepers of a tea garden are doing

I would perhaps say that the path in the garden is
