In the UK, Borstals were a place of detention for offenders aged 15–21, first introduced in 1908. From 1983 borstal institutions were officially known as youth custody centres, and have been replaced by young offender institutions.
It is like a prison. But young offenders can't be sent to prison for commiting a crime, so sometimes they are sent to a special place of detention and rehabilitation.
