approval of / approval for ?

Hi there,

Here's a fragment of my email. Before I started writing it, I checked the word "approval" and my dictionary says that one can use "of" or "for" after it... but I couldn't come up with a well-sounding English sentence using "approval of" or "approval for". Would it be allright to say in English "[...] for your approval for studying at your University" or "[...] for your approval of studying at your university" ?

As far as I understand correctly, now, after you have received the documents, we have to wait for your approval and permission to study at your University ? Will the approval be sent by post?

Best wishes,

I don't find any specific difference between "approval for" and "approval of". In your case, "of" would sound better, perhaps, just in order to aviod the repeated "for".

To me, yes. But wait for a native because I am not one.

still waiting for a native's reply Emotion: wink

You don't absolutely have to have of or for. You can leave it unstated -- implicit.
We have to wait for (two things)

1. your approval [you don't have to say of what -- it's obvious that it's the approval of your request to study there]

2. your permission to study at your university.

oh! that's what I wanted to know really... that (as far as I understand) I can't use a verb + -ing after approval (?)

so it's wrong to say approval of studying at your University (?)

would it be ok to say approval to study at your University ?

Hi,
Rather than requesting and waiting for approval and permission, I usually use and read the expression acceptance and admission

Of these two choices, the latter seems much more natural to me. But consider my previous post.

Clive, but why is that that you don't use expressions like approval or permission? If I may know of course Emotion: smile
