Appropriate use of need to and needs to

Please explain the usage of "need to" and "needs to". I am confused because I read in a book, we cannot use "need to" as "needs to" (which is modal here). We can use "need" as "needs" only when need plays the role of main verb.

Which one is right?

She need to work hard.

OR

She needs to work hard.

If I understand it correctly, this is wrong. It implies that e.g. "She need a husband" would be correct
