Appropriate use of an apostrophe

Please show the appropriate use of an apostrophe with words ending in "s".

Example: for the word Boss......is it Boss's or Boss' ?

Exampls: for the word Dennis.......is it Dennis's or Dennis' ?

Both forms are used. This is one of those things where even most native speakers don't know which is right. Technically most academic style guides prefer Boss's (it's also what I use), but you will just as much see Boss'.
