Appropriate sequence markers

Hi. Please help. I think we use words like "First," "Second" and "Third" (or perhaps "Thirdly") to mark the sequence in our writing. I also think we start the sequence with the word "First" or the phrase "First of all" and then usually go on to mark the second step with the word "Second."

After that, I think we usually mark the next step with the word "Thirdly," and not the word "Third." Why is that? Could we mark the next step with the word "Third," instead of what I think is the usual "Thirdly"?

And then should we mark the final step with the word "Finally"? Thank you in advance.

eg,

First (or First of all?), put the pan on the stove.

Second, pour some water in the pan, filling about the half of it.

Third (or Thirdly?), open the ramen bag and put the ramen in the boiling water.

.

.

Finally, pour the content in the dish and enjoy.

Personally I do not use the "ly" at the end of first, second, or third, but primarily that's because it's just the way I talk; not out of any attempt to follow some proper rule, of which I am completely ignorant.

However Ms Bruner seems to have some good thoughts on the subject if you want some light reading...
