Appropriate book for beginner

Ramona the Pest, by Beverly Cleary. Anything by Cleary, really. She writes for children, but she reads like literature. American.

The Sword in the Stone, by T. H. White. That is a little more advanced, and he's British. Again, a children's book, but a solid one.

I don't really think a book that begins "On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays it was Court Hand and Summulae Logicales, while the rest of the week it was the Organon, repetition and Astrology" is really the thing for learners,even at a moderately advanced level.

A few speed bumps! Enoon, this is a book that I used to recommend to my 15/16-year-old higher-ability native-speaking pupils in England. Some of them found it hard going.

Unfortunately I cannot think of any 'good' books for lower-level learners.

Several novels by John Steinbeck are easier to read and might provide a good amount of vocabulary. The Red Pony, The Grapes of Wrath, and The Pearl.

Try also:
White Fang by Jack London
Henry Huggins, or Ramona by Beverly Clearly
The Silent Boy by Lois Lowry
The Long Season of Rain by Helen Kim

I think you should start with something easier and shorter than The Grapes Of Wrath. Try The Old Man And The Sea by Ernest Hemingway. It's short and Hemingway uses a small vocabulary.
