A channel is an area of a river, lake, sea or bay which is deeper than the other areas.
If a boat gets out of the channel, it could become stuck on the bottom.

Channels are marked by floating buoys.
Some channels are man-made, so that large cargo ships can get to a port safely.
Making a channel involves dredging, where a specially-equipped ship digs out the bottom of the river, making it deeper.
