APPROACH TO THIS

Dear Teachers,

1. She tells me that John is a con artist.

- "con artist" is a person who is very good at cheating, right?

2. It is my suggestion that you tell your husband take hands off approach to this.

- "take hands off approach to this" means "don't interfere in this", right?

3. It's not to say that her parents are not at fault.

- "are not at fault" means "are not mistaken", right?

- "are not at fault" means "are not mistaken", right? Basically, yes, although I'd say 'are not in error'.

Why would you choose that over "not at fault"?

Not at fault - I'd say this means that they haven't done anything wrong.

So, because of the slightly convoluted 'It's not to say that her parents are not at fault.' actually means that her parents have done something wrong.
