Approach run

Hi everyone. It's been a while, hasn't it?

I need a little help with the term approach run. Wikipedia tells me that that is what you call the distance athletes are allowed to run to power their jumps in track and field events.
My question is, is that a term you would also conversationally?

Suppose you're out in the woods with your friend and you want to jump across a stream. Would you say?
- Take a longer approach run or you won't make it across.

That sounds technical to me. Maybe just run?
How would you say it?

Thanks for your help
H.
