Approach

Hey.

I were on a date with this really shy and quiet guy, and there was just this awkward silence throughout most of the date as I didn't know how to approach him.

Is 'approach' OK here even though I already were close to him, physically, so it was not like I walked over to him, but more like I didn't know what to ask him and talk to him about to get him to open up to me?
