Medical student intern at a hospital. Teachers and other professionals do a practicum. There are also work-study programs, which are primarily a way of earning tuition fees.

(Apprenticeships are for tradesmen and novitiates are for religious orders.)

for example a mechanical engineering student can go to general motor.

Co-ops are usually for a semester and the summer.

Internships are usually in the summer (and generally don't pay as well).

There are the terms used at American universities. I don't know about in other nations.
