I understand all the words in the sentence below but the middle part of this sentence is a bit confusing to me.
"If we hadn't done something we were excited about, that made us apprehensive and challenged everything we stood for, then there would really have been no reason to carry on".
OK, to me it says that if they hadn't done something exciting, something that would make them "anxious" and something that would challenge all they believed in, that their work would make no sense. Hmm, I don't know why, but it sounds strange to me?
