Can we say "He "received a great amount of appreciation" for his effort.

Not really, but there are nevertheless other 'things' that aren't things (objects) which are received. receive praise, receive applause, receive punishment Many word choices in English are so arbitrary that there's no point in trying to find the logic in them.
