appreciation

I am trying to understand what the word of appreciation exactly means in following context.

Study abroad gives you greater appreciation for diversity and nurtures your sense of independence.

First I understand "diversity" here means diverse cultures. Since we should admire different cultures, so, according to M-W below, appreciation here means admiration.

Do you think so? Do you think it could have other meanings here or be a combination of several meanings? Thanks a lot!

If you have an appreciation for diversity, you are more tolerant of cultures and people who are different from your own, and you believe that it's a good thing that there ARE differences. In this sense, admiration is right. You admire differences and consider them beautiful and/or intriguing.

Thanks Philip. It really is a great forum. I've been telling all of my students about it.
