Appreciate that

Is this a right way to use "appreciate"?

"I appreciate that you allow me to write down my practice here."

He uses "appreciate" for " thank you".

"Practice" is writing practice in English.

Yes, that is OK, but 'write down my practice' sound odd: you'd better change it to what you said 'practice my writing'.

Thank you for your reply.

I was confused because English-Japanese dictionaries say "appreciate that..." mean

"to recognize or understand (something) ."

So it's okay to say thank you. I understand!

By the way, I live in Yokohama, Japan and you teach in Yokohama.

What a coincidence!

Yes, formally 'appreciate' has that definition, but informally it is commonly used as in your sentence. That is a coincidence! Most of the people I meet here are in India or China or somewhere else far away.

Hi! I joined here.

It's weird there are few Japanese here, because many Japanese

seem eager to learn English. Maybe Lang-8 is popular than here.

I've tried Lang-8 before but it was hard to get a proper reply and I quit.

So I really appreciated your quick response.

Thank you again.

Hi Nao — thanks for joining us.

I'd never heard of Lang-8 before. There certainly are a lot of language websites, aren't there?
