I have noticed this particularly in Britain. My question is regarding the context of usage.

It is correct to say "I appreciate your hard work" This is a positive context,

But is it correct to say "I appreciate this news is disappointing for you" ?

OR "I appreciate that you are going through a tough time" ???? These are negative contexts.

I tend to use "I understand" or "I realise" in negative contexts.

I am not sure if the word "appreciate" would be appropriate for the latter case, although I find people using it.

Could anyone please throw some light on this?
