They are basically the same .
In theory, with #1 you could be talking about someone else, eg your brother, rather than about yourself.

They're both simple present tense, not modal. The passive voice version is simply less personal, in not mentioning the actor, "I." They're both "polite," although some might feel that "less personal" = "more polite."

Generally speaking, I would have thought that for expressions of appreciation, apologies, etc. 'more personal' = 'more polite'.
At least where the first person 'I/we' is concerned.
