Appointed as a peon or appointed a peon?

Yes. 'peon' is slang for a low-level worker.


The verb 'appoint' is usually used for much higher positions.

eg He was appointed (as) HR Manager. 'as' is optional.

For low-level positions, we usually say eg He was given a job as a junior clerk.
