"He applied to some university."
"He applied for some university."

The first one is almost indisputably correct. Would the second be just as correct?

He applied to some universities. That's how we say that idiomatically.

As Regards already pointed out, you apply for a job/position/class and apply to an institution. So, the students applied to the university for this fall's freshman class.
