Apply to vs be applied to

A-Group
1) The new technology was applied to farming.
2) The newest technology was applied to this tank.
3) An eco-friendly concept was applied to the exterior design of this house.
B-Group
4) The new technology applied to farming.
5) The newest technology applied to this tank.
6) An eco-friendly concept applied to the exterior design of this house.

I'd like to know what is the difference of the meaning between As and Bs, when comparing As and Bs with making a pair of As and Bs.

If you use examples that make no sense, I cannot explain the difference, except for the superficially obvious. One uses a helping verb, the other does not.

The helping verb is "was." "Was" is absent from all the B-Group sentences. "Was" is present in all the A-Group sentences.

The difference between A and B is "was."

I cannot explain sentences 2, 3, 5, and 6 because they make no sense.
