Apply for a gig?

When someone posts a gig on the Craigslist and I answer it. Can I say I "apply for" the gig? Does that make me an "applicant"? If not, what will be the proper noun and the verb?

Thanks.

Craigslist.com, a website for classifieds.

A gig is usually for a musical performance. Is that what you mean?

It is used informally in some situations to mean a job, but usually a temporary one.

You apply for a position, whether it's for a band or a job. That makes you an applicant.
