Apply for

I read from books.It says:

Egyptians also applied them for decoration.

I can't understand what's the meaning "apply for" here.

I know people say apply for a job, but I guess in this case it is different.

Sorry about I didn't write enough context for you. It was talking about the cosmetics ;-) So I guess you were right about talking the meaning of apply for here;)

Another example :

Egyptians applied facial cosmetics made out of animal and vegetable oils and herbs.

How about here word "apply" meaning. And I also feel I can say it like this: Egyptians applied facial cosmet
