Letter Writing

Application Letters

Hi, can someone let me know the difference between Application letters and Applications (only)?
Why is it that sometimes they are referred to as Application letters (especially while applying for a job) while most of the times they are simply mentioned as applications (without the word letter added to it). Seems to me like if its confined to applying for a jobs, its known as an Application letter but if it is a request for something then its known as an Application.

Please refer to the samples below.

1) Write an application to the Principal of your school requesting him to allow you to change your subjects

2) Write an application for granting Licence to Start a Proprietory Concern

3) Write a Letter of Application for the Post of a Stenographer

5)Write an application to the Registrar, University of Bombay, for the post of an Assistant Librarian in the University Library

6) How to write Leave Applications?

  • The term 'letter of application' is sometimes used when it is important to stress that the the application should consist of a letter.
  • The term 'application' is much more common, but it leaves the reader to decide if it should be a letter or some sort of form.
