I'd like to go take part in a NZ homestay programme this winter. I'm just filling out the application and wondering about a sentence I wrote. Is it better to say 1. If I'm not sure about something I'm critical at first...
or
2. If I'm not sure about something I look at it with a critical eye at first...
????
And there's also this question: " What do you feel you can contribute to your host family's homestay experience?"
I just don't know what to write... could anybody help me?

It is better to say 'If I'm not sure about something I look at it first with a critical eye'. ' -- tell them about how you will be able to communicate aspects of your own culture to your host family, and contribute to international understanding, etc.

If I am not sure about something, I tend to be quite cautious in my approach.
As for what you can contribute: mention your hobbies, interests, cultural background and the fact that you don't mind helping with the household chores.

Thank you! My English isn't the best, and I don't even know all the words in your sentence. Of course I'd like to use "modern" English, but nobody's ever teached me.
