apple? an apple?

Hello.
I learned that the word 'apple' is just a word that means 'apple' but 'an apple' means 'the apple that can be eaten.'
Is it true? If not, what is the difference between 'apple' and 'an apple'?

An apple just means one apple (that has not yet been defined) , so the indefinite article is used. The word apple is rarely used without an article (it's a countable noun) except perhaps when talking about flavours, cakes etc. What's your favourite flavour?
