Appeared/sitting for a portrait

Hi

He had painted the Jew (Jesus) as he appeared, omitting only the humiliating effects of violence. With the eyes he had created the universal serenity of nobility sitting for a portrait.

1. Does "appeared" mean "as he was"?

2. I understand that he painted serene and noble eyes of Jesus, but what does "sitting for a portrait" mean?

Thanks

Maybe if you could paraphrase the 2nd sentence for me that would help?

I took it to mean that "sitting for a portrait" means "suitable for a portrait". So, for example he painted serene and noble eyes of Jesus which

Hi,

With the eyes he had created the universal serenity of nobility sitting for a portrait.

He made the eyes look serene, in the way that the eyes of all noble peoole look if they sit for a portrait.

It's clearer now. From what you wrote it looks like he didn't depict the eyes of Jesus, but of nobility. So probably of those who were - maybe -

Hi,

Actually now I think he's depicting Jesus' eyes. Yes

And they (Jesus' eyes) looked like the ones of nobility (eyes like noble people have). Am I correct? Yes

I think by "nobility" we're not talking about "aristocracy". Right
