Appearance or appearances?

Don't judge people by appearances.

Is this correct? Should I use 'appearance' instead?

Do you mind my asking why you didn't use 'their appearances?' If my memory serves, I see such expressions as 'their daily lives' or 'their personalities,' which are the plural forms.

Appearance means the complete way a person appears externally to others -- their clothes, make up, hair style, manner of walking and speaking, etc.

When appearance is used as a countable noun, it means a instance when a person plays as an actor in a play.
She made several notworthy appearances as the Queen in Shakespeare's MacBeth.
